The hard-swinging Count Basie band was on the move from its beginnings in the Southwest in the 1930s to the second half of the century. This 1979 recording captures one of its fine later editions in Montreux, Switzerland, and given the appreciative studio audience, the session had the dynamic feel of a concert. The ten tunes include "Wind Machine," "Blues for Stephanie," "John the III," "There Will Never Be Another You," "Splanky," "Basie," "Bootie's Blues," "Watch What Happens," "Work Song," and "In a Mellow Tone." "It is the classic Basie ensemble sound (which never seems to get dated or lose its charm and power) that carries the day…. A highly enjoyable set."—All Music Guide
