This early Hitchcock film was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes in 1953. Montgomery Clift stars as Father Michael Logan, an apparent model of clerical piety, who hears a killer's confession. After eyewitnesses point to a priest as the murderer, Logan is unable to clear himself by naming the real culprit. Academy Award winners Anne Baxter and Karl Malden co-star as a former flame and police inspector whose attempts to clear Logan only entrap him further. Hitchcock shot the film in Quebec City, and the city's old world traditions and architecture play a central role in the story.
