The cute Beatle turns out to be a spot-on companion for a trip down memory lane. His voice is a bit hoarsened, with a Hoagy Carmichaelesque patina that suits both his elder statesman status and these nostalgic tunes from the Great American Songbook. With the exception of two lovely originals ("My Valentine" and "Only Our Hearts"), he croons standards like "Bye, Bye, Blackbird," "Inchworm," "The Glory of Love," "Always," and "More I Cannot Wish You" in a tender salute to the songs he grew up hearing his father play on the family piano. "McCartney has wisely chosen Diana Krall's band to back him. On tracks such as 'Home (When Shadows Fall),' it provides a warm, spacious bed for McCartney's subtle vocal…. He sounds startlingly at ease with the idiom, crooning like Chet Baker on 'Get Yourself Another Fool' and swinging like Sinatra on 'Ac-Cent-Tchu-Ate the Positive.' So comfortable and energized does McCartney sound that the question is not why he decided to make a vocal jazz record, but why he hasn't done it before."—Washington Post "Covers albums can be the last resort of the creatively bankrupt. This is nothing of the sort—it is the work of a man at the top of his game."—Daily Mail, London
