Two of classical music's most popular compositions are Antonio Vivaldi's highly imaginative set of concertos known as The Four Seasons and his joyful choral work the Gloria in D Major. The latter was written circa 1715 for the choir of the Ospedale della Pietà, an orphanage for girls (which is why the solos are for female voices only). Of Vivaldi's 500-plus concertos, 200 focus on the violin—among them his universally known and much-loved musical evocation of winter, spring, summer, and fall. As their name implies, Musica Antiqua perform it on period instruments.
